Monuments

One of the goals of the Peters Creek Historical Society is to preserve local history. With that in mind, the society has erected several local historical markers over the years.

Fort Cox
Historical marker is located on Stone Church Road 2.2 miles east of Finleyville and was a stockade fort built in the 1780’s to protect local settlers from Indian attack.

Whiskey Rebellion
Plaque erected at Mingo Presbyterian Church (Route 88 south of Finleyville) to commemorate the importance of the site as a meeting house during the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794,

Archie Mathies
This marker situated at the entrance to Finleyville Cemetery is to honor Archie Mathies, a resident of Finleyville who was awarded the Congressional medal of Honor for heroism in World War II

Cincinnati Mine Disaster
In conjunction with UMWA Local 224, a metal marker has been erected near the mule entrance of the old Cincinnati Mine (just south of Mingo Church) where 96 miners and one member of a rescue team were killed in a methane gas explosion on April 23, 1913.
